I think people want to connect.
Social networks connect.
All transactions are done based on connections.
So in that sense everything on the internet will become social networks. it is part of the product.

How bout a follow-up with details on weighing resources? I.e. the importance of strategic partnerships vs. crtitical review (bloggers).

We've had some success with industry critics, but have yet to team up with other spaces to grow our user base.

Cheers,

I agree 100%. The community is the product. Without the community a community site is nothing but a bunch of web code sitting on a server.

But communities of thousands is actually still quite special and in my mind comparing a targeted community site to Facebook is like being Latvia and comparing yourself to a G8 country.

Niche communities, which will most always grow linearly (vs. topic agnostic communities that have the potential to grow exponentially) benefit financially from the homogeneous customer base advertisers like and offer entirely different business models.

But dang, if it doesn't all come down to the special magic coming together and people finding and using a site. There's one part that is just uncontrollable.

Best success with the new App.
