In this interview, Ryan Carson from Carson Workshops talks to Dave Shea, the creator of CSS Zen Garden about the changes in IE7 and CSS3.

Summary of the interview

  1. In 2002, Dave started the CSS Zen Garden because he was getting tired of his job.
  2. Wired News re-designed, which got him excited about CSS
  3. Doug Bowman came up with image-replacement, which sparked Dave’s imagination to do CSS Zen Garden
  4. In 2003 Dave Shea entered the “Skin HotBot” contest and won an iPod, but never received it because he was Canadian!
  5. On the first week of CSS Zen Garden, it got covered on Metafilter and Boing Boing
  6. The inspiration for the the name “CSS Zen Garden” came from the initial design of the site.
  7. CSS3 won’t be out to the mass market for 10 years
  8. Microsoft is releasing IE7 primarily because Firefox has lit a fire under their feet
  9. CSS3 is going to be limited by support in IE7
  10. Recently finished the CSS Zen Garden book
  11. Wrote the whole book in 7 months
  12. The book is selling really well
  13. Regarding Vancouver Canada, there is a lot of freelancers, but there isn’t a united community
  14. Just launched rosenfeldmedia.com
  15. Wants to focus more on design and less on just coding a design comp
  16. To be a web professional, you need an appreciation for good web design - not just coding
  17. Recently switched to Mac
  18. Uses BBEdit for coding
  19. Uses Xyle Scope for debugging

    Really interesting interview. Enjoyed discovering more about a web designer who has been a major source of inspiration to me via his own work and that showcased on css zen garden.

    Dave Shea has been a huge inspiration in our outlook in design for our company and can’t wait to see whats next from him.
